This year, I had the privilege of leading a team of four eight and nine-year-olds through the Junior First Lego League competition. In our area of Florida, there are no competitions for this level, but the team exhibited their hard work at our local home school science fair. They worked hard, learned a lot about research (and First Lego League) and found a way to work together as a team – where everyone thinks their idea is the best. It was a great experience.

The team’s challenge was to figure out a tool and a place for learning. After much thought and a few failed research inquiries, they decided that their favorite place to learn about things was the outdoors and they narrowed their learning tool to a walkie-talkie.

The model of what they learned :: people using walkie-talkies to learn where the power lines are located...and also to identify a potentially venomous snake!

Each model had to incorporate a motor and a simple machine.
