These mini lego cash registers were created for the ever-changing lego city which lives in my boys’ bedroom. I think these are an add-on to the latest food truck creation. However, once a week, we asked them to clean it up, move the creations to the shelf or put it in their “save” box. But, every few months, the shelves and the “save” boxes become too full of creations and need culling.

I fully recognize that this is their “art” and try my best to respect that as much as possible, but there are times when the lego creations get out of hand. After helping to save some of their favorites and most-played with pieces, their dad or I will go in and have a lego shakedown. We clean up some of the shelves and take apart old legos and generally re-fill the bin that lives under their bed. It’s not always pretty and they don’t always take it gently, but the next day you can see how happy they are that we did something. It was as if they were paralyzed and unsure of what to do, but didn’t know how to ask for help.

I am ever grateful that I read the book, Simplicity Parenting, so many years ago and have done my best to keep their toys to a manageable level.  (I know – that’s sort of a silly statement when you think of the thousands of legos that we have, but we do limit most of the toys to legos). Even though it’s not always easy and they aren’t always happy about the process, we all become calmer in the aftermath. Even my messy child appreciates the fresh start.

And, in the meantime, we take a lot of pictures and preserve these creations for a long web life.
